Q & A
Why Towner? Why now?
More and more, our lives are dependent on technology. It moves us, brings us food, and connects us with friends and family, when we can’t be together.
And now that technology is so familiar, meeting new people in-person can feel like a burden, to some. But what is the “burden” of meeting someone in person?
The “burden” of meeting someone in-person is figuring out what interests are shared. After all, how do you start a conversation with someone new? And then how do you end it without someone getting mad?
Wouldn’t it be easier if we just knew what people were into? Knew what interests we shared with other people? Yes.
Towner is designed to share the “burden” of finding new people nearby who share your interests. So whatever you’re into, you can find people who care, so that together you can make life even better.
How does Towner compare with Meetup?
Meetup is a paid, group-first platform, where users become Members of a Group, then wait for an Administrator to organize a formal Event, which is generally in the distant future at a central (and sometimes convenient) location at a time (that hopefully works for you).
Towner is a free, individual-first platform, where users can immediately see who shares their Intos nearby, and any verified user can post a casual Plan or Chat to connect with other people nearby. Furthermore, if the user is part of a Community, then they have similar freedoms of being able to post and connect with other Members.
How does Towner compare with Facebook?
Facebook is a friends-first platform with so many Notifications is generally wise to turn them off. And if you’re interested in a specific activity, then you’ll likely need to search and review many redundant, partially-active Groups until you find the one you like. And then – if your Notifications are off – you won’t receive any notifications from the group until the opportunity has passed.
Towner is a people-first platform with strict Notifications that are aligned with the Intos you’ve selected. And if you’re interested in a specific activity, then you’ll be notified of Plans or Chats posted to your followed Intos and be able to see users in your area who match that Into.
How does Towner compare with Dating Apps?
Dating Apps are inherently romantic. The main activity on a dating site is looking through faces. This face-first approach can mean that people end up looking past the person who’s actually best suited for them. And when individuals meet, the encounter tends to be 1-on-1 and romantically-charged.
Towner is inherently interest-based. The main activity on Towner is engaging with interest-based content. The interest-first approach allows connection to be more activity-centered. And when individuals meet, it is encouraged that 3+ individuals gather, resulting in a safer, more organic encounter.
